Me and the beautiful Haw Pha Bang inside the Royal Palace Museum

First visit: June 2011
My Country #21

In June 2011, I was able to visit Laos for the first time together with Mike, where we spent a few days exploring Luang Prabang. It was only a side-trip as we were also visiting Thailand at the same time but nevertheless, we fell in love with the people and the culture and eventually wished we had stayed much longer. In case you are planning a trip to Luang Prabang, here are some of my travel tips.

Alms Giving Ceremony: This is definitely the highlight of our trip in Luang Prabang. It starts very early so we had to get up around 5 in the morning but it was definitely worth it.

Kuang Si Falls: This is absolutely one of the most beautiful falls we've visited. The water temperature was perfect, I really couldn't ask for more 👍

Royal Palace Museum: Built in 1904 during the French regime, this is one of the top attractions in Luang Prabang and simply not to be missed.

Wat Wisunarat: This is Luang Prabang's oldest temple.

Wat Xieng Thong or The Golden City Temple

Pak Ou Caves: Located about 25 kilometers north of Luang Prabang, you would need to take a boat to reach the cave. Once inside, you will find around 4,000 Buddha icons.

Wat Long Khoun: Also known as the Monastery of the Happy.

Mount Phousi: This is a very popular place for watching the sunset.

Visiting handicrafts stores

Visiting a whiskey village where you can find home made Laos whiskey.

Taking cooking classes: This is quite popular here so why not bring out the "Jamie Oliver" in you while exploring Luang Prabang at the same time 😉

Enjoying the local food: Feel free to indulge yourself to what Laos has to offer when it comes to food. Don't miss the Khao Niaw (sticky rice) and the Sindad (Lao barbecue).

Visiting the Luang Prabang night market: It was a very interesting experience (for me) visiting their night markets since it's not like the ones you would normally see in bigger Asian cities. Of course, I found a very nice shirt with Lao design which was perfect as a souvenir.
